Travel Cheap
Travel expenses can often take a big bite out of your holiday budget. But they don't have to! There are plenty of ways to save on train, bus and tube fares if you know how. So start travelling like a local; start travelling for less!
Always book your journey in advance
It's even worth buying the day before you travel to make savings on standard National Rail fares. Fares are usually released from sale 12 weeks before travel - so this is the best time to find a cheaper fare though the ticket may be restricted to a specific day and time. See: www.nationalrail.co.uk.
Megabus
You can also book train and bus routes through Megabus. There are fewer routes available than through National Express or National Rail but you can book up to 45 days in advance and prices start from £1. The earlier you book the more likely you are to find a good deal. See: www.megabus.com.
Oyster cards
The Oyster reusable travel card for London will always charge you the cheapest fare for you journey and is valid on all London overground, underground, buses and DLR routes. If you make multiple journeys in one day, it will not charge you more than a one-day travel card. You can also load your Oyster with a weekly travel card if you're staying longer. And don't forget, under 11 year olds travel free when travelling with an adult. See: VisitBritain Direct Oyster Cards (www.visitbritaindirect.com/en-GB/detail.aspx?ProductCode=T105).
